Connecting English Students and Seniors over the Internet

Updated: Apr 19, 2024

You have 2 problems:

1. Getting students who are learning english to practise speaking and improving it.

2. You have native english speaking old folks living in retirement homes who could use some company and interaction.

Tadaaaa! And here you have it! Connecting these students to the old folks! The students gets to practise and improve their english, and at the same time, the old folks gets some company.

While this campaign was done in 2014, it definitely deserves another shout out.

Even though I am doing graphic design, I see a lot of similarities in what I do and what this video is about. Creating creative solutions to problems. Graphic designers should not just think of their jobs as creating nice images and visuals, but to also come up with creative and effective solutions to the brief.

Original Post:

Brazilian language school CNA came up wtih an innovative way of teaching its students English; connecting them to Americans in retirement homes who wanted someone to talk to. Agency FCB Brazil facilitated the project, using a digital tool developed exclusively for the purpose. The tool allows students to choose a registered institution and a topic suggested by the system. The conversation is recorded and a video is uploaded to a private YouTube channel so that teachers can evaluate the students' development; they benefit by improving their English, while the retirees enjoyed talking, and (judging by this video) both ends clearly enjoy hearing about another country and culture. The pilot project was implemented in the CNA unit in Liberdade and the Windsor Park Retirement Community in Chicago, USA.
